Hewitt, Texas is the second largest city in McLennan County with an estimated population of 13,500 residents. In 1982, the city became a home rule city and adopted the current Charter, which established the council-manager form of government.
Hewitt’s City Council is made of up of seven members with the mayor being selected by the members of the City Council in May each year. Council members serve two-year staggered terms. The city manager is appointed by the City Council to implement policies and manage day-to-day operations of the city. The mayor and Council consider ordinances, resolutions and other matters related to establishing and directing city policy. All meetings of the City Council are posted, and concerned citizens are invited to attend and participate.
The City also seeks input from the community through its various boards and commissions whose members are appointed by the City Council. Hewitt’s boards and commissions include the Library Board, Planning and Zoning Commission, Civil Service Commission, Board of Adjustment, as well as the Advisory Committee on Beautification, Parks and Recreation and Recycling.
The City owns and operates Hewitt’s water supply and distribution system and maintains public drainage areas, wastewater lines, streets and other public infrastructure facilities. The Hewitt Fire and Police Departments provide full-time 24-hour protection. Professional emergency response is provided around the clock. The Hewitt Public Library provides access to information and hosts special programs for the citizens.
